Night in Cardiff - Sat 19th Jan

The Night out in Cardiff on Saturday has been cancelled. Sorry!

However, we are going to a local pub in Caerphilly, if anyone wants to join us there.

2008 - Leicestershire put to bed - Match 5

An excellent result for Mid Glamorgan as the Christmas Turkey is worked off.

After a long trek and several wrong turns the Mid Glamorgan Tigers arrived and brought with them the fury that had been building before the new year.

A great result of 13 - 2 saw us rising to the top of the table again (we were second after Worcestshire but we were a game in hand).

The score ensured we kept our +1 bonus point which is necessary for our end of year clash.

A detailed match report to follow. Article link will be added here when complete.

WELSH OPEN - QUALIFICATION

The Welsh Series
tournament kicked off today with qualification, and it was 15 year old Sarah Thomas of the RV Academy who continued her great form  beating the seeded Walaszek form Poland 21-16 21-9, and then upsetting England’s Cousins 18-21, 21-18, 21-17 in a three match encounter.

RVBA coach Richard Vaughan said It’s a great result for Sarah as it shows she can make the jump from junior to senior badminton which a lot of players fail at. Today she had two tough games on paper but won both in good style. I was 15-16 when I reached the semi final here, and Sarah is of a similar age and level so she looks to have a great future if her improvement continues .

All RV Academy players did well in the event. Vikki Jones played well but went out to an impressive Kate Robinshaw of England 21-14 21-15, who also defeated Academy coach Piret Hamer in the final round of qualification. Gareth Day played men’s doubles with Simon Rowe and went out to English opposition. Gareth Cox had good matches both in the singles and doubles events.

Tomorrow Sarah Thomas plays the main draw against Harriet Johnston. Sparring player Zhu min takes on Gilliland of Scotland. Piret Hamer plays the doubles  with Rachelle Phillips against English opposition. Rachel Thomas plays mixed with Michael Lewis, and ladies doubles with Karoline Kotte of Sweden.

Kelly Blake, and Vikki Jones also represented Wales in the Scotland, Ireland triangular match Wednesday night which saw Wales go down 1-4 to Ireland and 0-5 to Scotland.

Feedback - Match 3. Mid Glamorgan vs. Warwickshire

Match 3 - Mid Glamorgan vs. Warwickshire, Sunday 25th November

 From the Ladies Perspective!

Starting off…….Michelle Smith almost collapsed at the thought of having to play singles as Vikki Jones was running a little late!

Vikki Jones and Nicole Walkley had been down to Swansea first thing Sunday morning for try outs to get in the Welsh Universities Badminton Team, and were pushing for time to get to the county match for 11am. Mr Walkley I believe had hammered it back to Caerphilly….hopefully not picking up any speeding tickets on the way!!!!

Fortunately when Simon Rowe phoned Vikki at about 11:15, she was outside and here to play her singles game….Much to Michelle’s relief!!!!

Vikki and Kiri Evans went on to play their singles, in which both of them took their games in two. Vikki had victory over Keira Mason, 21-3 and 21-4. Kiri also took her 2 games against Charlotte Kennedy 21-12 and 21-8. Two very comfortable wins for MG!

After all the singles games, The match stood at 4-0 to Mid Glamorgan, with Andrew Woodland & Gareth Day Taking their singles games.

Ladies doubles was next on the agenda. Vikki Jones & Nicole Walkley partnered each other as first pair, and Kiri Evans & Michelle Smith played second pair.

Vikki & Nicole went on to play 1st couple Clair John & Ruth Beyer, and even though Nicole thought they didn’t play too well, they still won their games 21-8 and 21-13.

Kiri & Michelle went on to play Charlotte Kennedy & Keira Mason, winning the first game 21-5; However the second game was a lot closer, with the end result 21-15 to MG. Ladies had a change around, Vikki & Nicole played the second couple, and beat them 21-6, 21-6. Michelle & Kiri also took their games against the first couple 21-16 & 21-11.

At the end of Level doubles play Mid Glamorgan were 12-0 up. Quite Impressive hey!!!

Mixed doubles was last on the agenda.

Andy Micklesborough & Vikki Jones played Neil Lawrence & Ruth Beyer, and took their games 21-13 & 21-4.

Roy Watkins & Nicole Walkley beat Steve Baber & Clair John, 22-20 & 21-8.

And Finally Andrew Woodland & Michelle Smith won their games against Alex Owens & Keira Mason 21-12 & 21-12……Consistent!

End result Mid Glamorgan 15, Warwickshire 0. An excellent win for MG….Bring on the next components!!!!

Everyone played really well, and done the County proud. Well Done team!
