Warrickshire V Wiltshire - Match report by Warrickshire

Mark Sellwood got the County 2nd's off to a good start in their latest match against Wiltshire's 1st Team when he won the opening  singles rubber against Simon Woodhouse 21/18, 21/14.   At no. 2, Ryan Parsons found himself up against a former Warwickshire player in Sam Barber.   On this occasion, Sam came out on top winning 21/15, 21/15.

The ladies' singles events were also shared.   Mary LeDruillenec lost out 21/18, 21/9, against Lisa Turner, but Claire Mort played extremely well to beat another ex Warwickshire player, - Alice Walters.   Alice played for Warwickshire for several seasons when she was studying at Birmingham University, but on this occasion she had to be content with second best, Claire winning 21/17, 24/22.

The men's doubles events followed the pattern of the singles with the 4 rubbers being equally shared.   Mark Sellwood & Andrew Wainwright beat Justin Andrews & Steve. Hulbert 21/8, 21/9, and they also accounted for Gary Davies & Simon Woodhouse, beating them 21/11, 21/14.   Carl Goode & James Taylor were comfortably beaten 21/11, 21/11, by Davies & Woodhouse, but they were unlucky to lose a close 3 game rubber against Andrews & Hulbert, - going down 21/16, 9/21, 24/26.

Wiltshire took command of the match when they won all 4 of the ladies' doubles rubbers, although 3 of the 4 did go to 3 games.   Faye Gregory & Mary LeDruillenec were beaten 21/17, 21/12, by Neronique Mandok & Julie Russell, and they then lost 19/21, 21/17, 15/21, against Heather McCune & Lisa Turner.   Claire Mort & Helen Richmond lost a close third game - 22/24, - to lose their rubber 14/21, 21/11, 22/24, against McCune & Turner, and they were also beaten in 3 games by Mandok & Russell, the score being 12/21, 22/20, 8/21.

With the match standing at 8-4 to Wiltshire, the County needed to win 2 of the final 3 mixed doubles events to gain a losing match point.    When Carl Goode & Mary LeDruillenec went down 17/21, 25/23, 12/21, against Justin Andrews & Julie Russell in the first of them the situation looked bleak.   However, Andrew Wainwright & Faye Gregory managed to get the better of Gary Davies & Heather McCune winning 21/18, 16/21, 21/11, and Ryan Parsons & Claire Mort then secured the vital point by beating Steve. Hulbert & Alice Walters 21/14, 18/21, 21/11.

This match could easily have gone the other way with Warwickshire ending up as victors.   However, one or two of the County's players were not at their best and in a close match of this nature that makes all the difference to the result.
