Warrickshire V Wiltshire - Match report by Wiltshire

The first team commenced their season with a 9 – 6 win over Warwickshire II at the Christie Miller Sports Centre on Sunday. This season they are playing in a group in Regional Division 1 based on the South Midlands as opposed to a Southern Counties group.

The match was all square after the singles with 2 set wins for Sam Barber and Lisa Turner while Simon Woodhouse and Alice Walters both lost in straight sets. The mens doubles were also shared with both pairs Justin Andrews and Steve Hulbert (on his first team debut) and Gary Davies and Simon Woodhouse beating the Warwickshire 2nd pair although Justin and Steve only won 26 – 24 in the deciding set. The Warwickshire 1st pair won both of their matches in straight sets.



The performance of the Wiltshire ladies doubles pairs turned the match in the home county’s favour as they won all four matches to give Wiltshire an unassailable lead of 8 – 4. Veronique Manook and Julie Russell beat the first pair in 2 sets and the 2nd pair in 3 sets while Heather McCune and Lisa Turner took 3 sets to win both their matches.


Wiltshire then needed 2 more wins in the mixed doubles to gain maximum points and all three matches went to the deciding set but only Justin Andrews and Julie Russell won with defeats for Gary Davies/Heather McCune and Steve Hulbert/Alice Walters to leave the score at 9 – 6 and Wiltshire gaining 2 points and Warwickshire II 1 point.
